WORLD WAR I CENTENARY LIVING REMEMBRANCE
FLORAL CARPET DESIGN for WHANGAREI CITY - COMMISSION
Pro Patria
Pro Patria is constructed on a circular base of the ground creeper Muehlenbeckia astonii interwoven with large heart-shaped leaves of kawakawa Macropiper excelsum which when crushed exude a sweet but melancholy perfume. This is the scent of enduring sadness. It is the quality that sets the tone for this work by remembering not only the funereal garlands worn by Maori during times of great lamentation and loss but also the tender fronds of fresh green willow still worn by English villagers in ancient celebrations acknowledging the cycle of the seasons and the transience of youth. Also integrated into the form of the wreath are stems of arum Zantedechia aethiopica the elegant white lily most loved in 19th century New Zealand as a colonial symbol of grief as well as some resinous sprigs of rosemary Rosmarinus officinalis the fragrant herb of remembrance bound together with spiked sprays of gorse Ulex europaeus whose treacherous thorns prick at both the conscience and the heart. Also included is a small bundle of manuka Leptospernum scoparium tied with flax Phormium tenax which refers to the uniquely Kiwi custom of mailing parcels of ti-tree twigs for homesick New Zealanders to consign to Northern hemisphere hearths during the long dark winter of a cold European night. Burning manuka cuttings releases not only the astringent and healing oil but also an aromatic sense of nationhood and family nostalgia as the smell of a well-remembered summer barbeque or whanau hangi is carried by the smoke.
NORTHERN ADVOCATE: The World War I Centenary Living Remembrance Floral Carpets were designed by Brett A'Court, Fiona Pardington, Jo Hardy, Carole Prentice and Scott McFarlane. The project was organised through Whangarei Art Museum, in collaboration with the Whangarei District Council and Returned Services Association. It is made possible with a $12,000 grant from national heritage funding that will support events in communities all over New Zealand that commemorate World War I. Julie-Anne Smith Rylev, from Bloom Flowers, has overseen the creation of the art installations, in which volunteers have woven thousands of blooms into the floral carpets.
